Prompt 1
What is School For?
To me, school is for a variety of things. There are many benefits that can be had by attending and using schooling for advantages. One of those advantages are building connections for future use. I believe students should be instructed how to use their environment and the people within it to create bonds and relationship with individuals or cohorts who can assist them in getting the next level. Whether the next level be higher education, occupational, or communal connections, I believe school can be a resource tool to assist one in placing building blocks for their societal advancement.
Teaching back at my alma mater, my perspective of education has changed over the last decade or so. I no longer see education as a simple stepping stone into the next level. Rather, education is an eco-system that can be used for the advancement of not only self, but peer and social groups. Within my low-economical classroom, I notice how disadvantaged my students are when it comes to education. It is my job as mentor and educator to bring to light the ills and hurdles these kids face. I don't believe it is my duty to direct students to do a specific something in life, rather, to encourage them to think independently and have pride in their community in order to make decisions for themselves.
Education is a way for students (especially my students) to use their surroundings as resources. Eduction a not only the "passport into the future" (as stated by Malcolm X - one of my favorite public speakers), but also a tool that needs to be held in order to build. Education is a platform that uplifts and connects multiple variables and sources in order for the improvement of community, civic pride and individual aspirations.
